1ST JURADO CUP (NEG & ECC)
JURADO CUP: The Search for Del Pilar
By: Dan Jimenez ‘77

Years have passed. To most, decades. To some, half a century at least. The Philippine Military Academy and the grounds of Fort del Pilar have become vignettes of a treasured past.
Albeit, a memory carved in the hearts of once young cadets whose idealism and insurmountable spirit gave way to a pursuit of excellence that never ceased. Creaky joints, muscle spasms and
laboring eye sights notwithstanding.

PMA alumni scattered across the globe have gravitated towards each other in their own neck-o-the-woods and formed their associations in continuance of the brotherhood that the Academy
bestowed. A brotherhood that neither time nor distance can break.

On the United States Atlantic front, there was the East Coast Chapter (ECC) that was comprised of those who live in the New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania territories and those denizens of Washington, DC/Maryland/Virginia. The 250-mile distance and the 4-hour long commute somehow became impediments for joint activities. Thus the North East Group (NEG) was born while the ECC remained.

And the twain would never meet?

The Presidents of the two chapters, Pards Espejo ’74 and Dan Jimenez ’77, firstie and
plebe back in PMA, agreed to hold a dual meet of chosen events which initially just included tennis and karaoke over Pards piping hot papaitan. It was a grand day in 2002 when the dual meet happened. Who won never mattered. Laughter, kayahizing, frolics, plebe stories and camaraderie did. It became a yearly event with additional activities. And as always, fun was the aim and was achieved.

The very first one set the tone and started what is now a bi-annual tradition in honor of an
ideal called PMA. It is not just a sporting event. It is to pay tribute and propagate what our Alma
Mater has bequeathed each graduate; courage, integrity, loyalty, and brotherhood.

Participants in the early years included defense secretaries and attaches, ex-plebes and ex-
cadets, graduates and non-graduates, descendants and loved ones. Neither military rank nor

government position mattered. The PMA stamp remained the great equalizer. Although one rule
remained: only an uppie can tackle, only an undie can kayahize.

The next JC, twenty-two years old and just getting stronger, will be in November 2024 in
sunny Orlando, Florida. At the Academy, most graduate at this age–full of hope, unyielding
idealism, and a desire to make a difference. JC may be just for fun, reminiscence and reunion with those who share the same values and beliefs. But JC can also be a start to an ideal more noble.

With the Philippine Military Academy as our origin and heritage, nothing is impossible.
The following is a brief synopsis of the past 20 years, written as statistical and historical
accounts. What is not written is the exhilaration of being there.

Plebes, one more time: “As each Saturday adds to our past…”

1ST TRI- MEET (with MIDWEST CHAPTER)
JURADO CUP OVERSEAS
By: Murdie Olan ‘79

Since 2022, the Jurado Cup outside the portals of the Academy had been a regular toss-up
between the NEG and the ECC. The NEG chose Red as their team color while ECC chose green. The sports meet started with three events: lawn tennis, golf and karaoke. According to accounts of the participating bugs, everyone enjoyed the competition to the max; as such, Jurado Cup became an annual event. The games were held (and continue to be held) every Labor Day weekend with ECC and NEG alternately hosting the games.

To raise the level of competition and to make the event more exciting, two more events were
added in succeeding years. A perpetual trophy, a replica of the PMA Jurado Cup, was made. It was awarded to the winning team at the end of the games. Every year, the name of the team that won the Jurado Cup is engraved on the trophy. From thereon until 2012, the RED and GREEN teams have been competing in five events–lawn tennis, karaoke, golf, basketball and volleyball, not only for the coveted Cup, but more importantly for “bragging rights”.

In 2013, bugs from Chicago got wind of this yearly meet from all the hype and Facebook exposure of the event. The Chicago bugs organized a fearless team and “gatecrashed” their way to the Jurado Cup in Drums, Pennsylvania. They named their team the MidWest Group (MWG) and chose orange as their team color. Because of the limited number of players, MWG invited two bugs from Georgia to join their team. Still, the MWG was very undermanned (composed of six families) compared to the other two teams at that time.

With three teams competing, a new flavor was added to the tournament, which made the
games more fun and interesting. During the 2013 Jurado Cup, the champion team would only be
determined after the last event was completed. NEG led on overall points when ECC and MWG
played the final game of the meet, volleyball. If ECC won, they would be team champions and will
retain the Cup. If MWG won, NEG will become the new Jurado Cup Champions. With the additional cheering support from the NEG, MWG won the volleyball title over ECC, consequently making NEG the 2013 Jurado Cup Champs.

In the 2014 Jurado Cup, bugs from California, Canada and Dubai joined the Jurado Cup
fanfare. As expected, the event was a big success, with the never ending “during our time”
stories, bolahizing and kayahizing as the highlights. The MWG emerged as Jurado Cup champs
on their second try, convincingly winning three of the five events: basketball, volleyball, and golf.
Jurado Cup 2015 was entirely different from the previous ones. It was the first time that the
games were held outside of the ECC domain, hosted by the MWG in Chicago. The attendance of
additional bugs from California and Canada boosted its record-attendance. First-timers from Texas, Arizona, Europe, and the Philippines have also participated in this hugely popular event. The Jurado Cup had transformed into the PMAAA Homecoming overseas. This prompted the organizers to consider holding the succeeding Jurado Cup games in California, Canada and Nevada.

LAS VEGAS:
HISTORY OF JURADO CUP 2019
By: Cav Rory Hormillosa ’78
President, Midwest Group

It was the turn of the Chicago-based Midwest Group (MWG) to host after JC17 in
Virginia. Following suggestions from the leadership and senior advisory councils of the then
three traditional major participating PMAAA chapter teams (MWG, NEG, ECC), it was decided
that the next JC be held in Las Vegas. And so, the MWG chapter organization under its President, Cav Rory Hormillosa, accepted the responsibility to host and organize the next JC with due consideration to the fact that major changes have to be made instead of the ‘vault file’ format of doing the Jurado Cup event.

Significant changes were made beginning with JC2019, to wit:

1. MWG with co-host NVG. Since the planned events will not be held at the host’s home base,
the incoming host, MWG, collaborated with the Nevada Group (NVG) to be the co-host to help out with arrangements with local events venues.

2. East (Red) versus West (Blue). The traditional JC team competitions were between the
three mentioned Eastern chapter teams with affiliations from some Western chapter
members who joined voluntarily with any of the teams of their choice. With the increase in the
number of participating teams, the organizers conceptualized and implemented a 2-team format
based on the geographical location of the participants’ PMAAA chapter on each side of
the U.S. Mississippi River.

3. Biennial Jurado Cup. At the conclusion of JC17, it was agreed upon by the officers and
senior members of MWG, NEG and ECC that, henceforth, JC shall be held every two years to
encourage more attendance by making the event more schedule-friendly and affordable to
participants.

4. Jurado Cup 2019 in October. JC19 was held on October 25-27, 2019 in Las Vegas, NV. It
was the first Jurado Cup to be held biennially. The previous JCs were traditionally held annually
around Labor Day weekend. This new date of holding a JC was not by any means a matter of
scheduling policy. Future hosts still have the prerogative of selecting the most convenient
schedule on a biennial year basis.

The exciting and highly participated sports competitions were Bowling, Golf, Tennis,
Basketball and Volleyball. Karaoke singing was included as part of the team competition. All events were held within the 3-day schedule at different venues in Las Vegas except for Golf that was held in Henderson, NV.

After the dust of competition settled, it was worth mentioning the game participants generally
showed sportsmanly conduct professing that their ‘desire to win is second only to the love of the
game itself’ (not forgetting the Cadet’s Prayer).

The individual team sports winners were the following:

Bowling – East
Golf – West
Tennis – East
Basketball – Draw
Volleyball – West
Karaoke Singing – West
Jurado Cup 2019 Champion – The West (Blue) Team!
Main billeting for the participants and guests was at the beautiful Gold Coast Hotel &
Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Likewise held as part of JC2019 were two social events during Day-1 and Day-2. The well-
attended Welcome Dinner & Boodlefight in Day-1 sponsored by NVG was held at
the Magtoto Residence in Henderson, NV.

On Day-2 the fun-filled and likewise much attended Fellowship Night & Hop was held at the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino Ballroom, Las Vegas, NV. The major part of that evening event was the Karaoke singing competition that was seriously and ‘with feelings’ participated in by the Red and Blue contestants. The awarding of the golf tournament Individual and Battle
of Classes winners also took place during that same evening event.

Overall attendance and participation in the various JC19 events was upward of 240 consisting cavaliers and members of their families. Included were a good number of around 30 attendees coming all the way from the Philippines.

Jurado Cup 2019 was made possible mainly thru the efforts of the Organizing
and Coordinating Committee composed of the following:
